On the 6th and 7th of September, 2017, Jeffrey Allen and Agata Hidalgo visited our school as part of the Healthy Lifestyle Programme. Jeffrey Allen is a lifestyle coach, fitness instructor and ex special forces. He was in the army for 21 years and was also part of the Army Ranger Wing.
Jeffrey begun by telling us about his life story. Jeff dropped out of school at the age of 15. He was dyslexic but didn't find out until he was 33! He also had a stammer and found school very difficult. He started working on a farm as a farm apprentice but felt that he didn't receive the right amount of pay for the amount of work he was putting in. His older brother had joined the army and made more than double what Jeffrey was making. Jeff joined the army in 1985. Jeffrey didn't like the army because the others in his unit weren't as committed as him and he would have to do their work as well as his own when they didn't show up for duty. He wanted to join the special forces because he knew everyone would be as committed as him. To join the special forces you have to go through a month selection course. Jeff applied with 97 other men and the end only 8 finished the course. He was a in the special forces for 9 years.
Agata Hidalgo is a nutritionist who also talked to us about mindfulness. Agata told us that sugar is the most important food to avoid because when you do not use up all the sugar in your body it converts to fat. She discussed the dangers of diabetes and obesity with us and how MSG is a flavoring found in most processed foods. It is very addictive and makes you want to keep eating.
The Hunter Games were made up of 6 different physical activities. Our year was divided into teams and we competed in all the games. Jeff pushed us to preform to our best and to work as part of a team. I was part of the pink team. There were awards given out to people at the end, a gold, silver and bronze medal was given to the three best individuals and there was a trophy given to the best team.
I enjoyed the Healthy Lifestyle Programme and it really motivated me to eat healthier and become more active.
