On the 16th of October, I registered online for the GAA Future Leaders Programme.
On Monday, the 22nd of January, Kevin Molloy, Bosco and Damien Coleman came to our school to tell us how to train a team, the characteristics necessary to train one and the basic skills.
I learned that when training younger groups you need to play fun games, then modified drills followed by a game. I also learned that I need to be patient, kind and fair to all participants. I learned how to teach certain drills and how to either make them harder for more advanced players or make them easier for weaker players.
We were also put into groups. Each of these groups were given a certain skill. We were given about 20 minutes to come up with an easy drill, a modified drill and a game, using the skill. We also had to break the skill down into step by step instructions. At the end of the day we had to preform this drill and games in front of the other groups. They then got to take part in the games. My group had the hand pass.
As a result of this training day, we now have the opportunity to set up a blitz between the 1st and 2nd year hurling and camogie teams. This blitz will take place on Thursdays at lunch. A chairperson was elected to organise the blitz. A secretary to type up news, Refs to referee the games, and managers to divide the 2 years into teams. I am a manager of one of the camogie teams. There are 4 teams in total.
Once we finish all the group games, we will play a semi final and then a final.
The winning team will get their picture on the school tv's.
